#*$*% Residents' Association

Bah Humbug! The residents' association has been wittering for ages about getting ramps built on the roads where I live. I thought that idiocy had gone away - but no such luck. There is now a dirty great ramp just down the road.

So now we're going to suffer the inconvenience and wear and tear of driving over ramps, with the increased traffic noise as cars slow down before and speed up afterwards, and the resulting increase in pollution.

It's not as though there were even a problem with speeding, or kids having to play in the street.

It looks like I'm going to have to keep an eye on these witless do-gooders! Who knows what they'll come up with next? Parking permits?

Sorry about the speed bumps... I don't recall your street being particularly busy or even that zippy. Do-gooders rarely do actual good, do they? My equivalent of your resident's assoc insist that my window blinds match my neighbours and that my curtains are of a particular colour. When I dared to bust out of the mould (I didn't even realize I had) I was quickly set straight with a rather terse letter. On letterhead.

CAN they stop you from having the wrong sort of blinds, or colour of curtains?

The fascists can terminate my membership agreement, thereby evicting me from the building! Pffft! Come on! Can't they understand those icky mustard yellow blinds clash with my decorating scheme. Sigh.

I have mixed feelings about speed humps, although if you say there are no problems with speeding or kids in the street then they are completely unnecessary in your case. There seems to be no standard hump, meaning that some humps are quite gentle, and others are very aggressive, giving a big shock to most cars regardless of what speed they are moving at. I think far too many are too aggressive (ie high and steep).
But, more generally, in a world where excessive speed is often a problem, how does anyone stop speeding without being accused of "raising revenue"? Instantaneous speed cameras only prevent speeding at one specific location, and invites criticism with regards to being a stealth tax on motorists. Average speed cameras are better, but are better suited to motorways and trunk roads, and still invite the same criticism.
The only way to stop people from speeding is to force them in a way that doesn't land them with a penalty charge. Road humps seem to fit the bill for quiet roads...
